Will our community sign a covenant to aid refugees fleeing troubled lands?
We don’t know whether the British Government, or ‘the authorities’ will ever grant us the opportunity to provide a refuge and show the kind of hospitality that is part of the history of these islands. This is a small gesture of dissent telling our government that shutting the door in the face of such desperate people is not done in the name of our community.
In the last week, it has been revealed that many individuals and communities are also throwing pebbles in the water, and the small ripples they have created are now forming a huge wave of dissent which is forcing our Prime Minister to reconsider.
We are a small group of Christians whose message and invitation is Christ-centred, but you may be a community of another faith or no faith and have your own ideas of how, and to whom, you extend your invitation. We undertook to ‘open our hearts, our community, our church, and our homes’ to just one family, or a small number of individuals, fleeing religious persecution in Syria. As Christians, we are well-placed to aid other Christians, but we made it clear that we do not discriminate against other faith groups who would also be welcomed. Such hospitality will be at our own expense, using our own time and resources until the refugees are settled.
Once we have around a dozen signatories we will place a copy of the covenant in the hands of our local councillors, our MP, and David Cameron.
Our idea is to act quickly, avoid over-intellectualizing and over-complicating this small gesture, which comes from the heart rather than from the mind. If your community could find it in your hearts, through a covenant or any other means, to show hospitality, and then spread the word. Just imagine! We could help tens of thousands, rather than the thousands of refugees being considered at the moment.
We thank you for your kind consideration.
